The Kiss Above the Church

The above painting is called “The Kiss Above the Church” and it has a very fun personal story behind it.

It was Spring time in 1981, when the communist era was still really bad, and I was a college student in Prague. One day I went with a group of friends to a bar which was in the Old Town Square (one of the most popular tourist spots in the city). After the bar closed, one of my friends who was studying architecture said, “let’s climb the Tyn Church, it’s really ‘in’.” The reason we could actually climb it was because the church was under construction. They were remodeling the facade and there was scaffolding from the bottom all they way to the top. And so we went. I can remember exactly what clothes I was wearing, and I remember leaving our belongings next to the building and climbing up to the top. I was standing so high that the tip of the top tower was up to my knee. The view was breathtaking. We all hugged and kissed. It was one of the most unforgettable moments we experienced. I had to make this picture eventually. The other thing that makes this picture so special is the Old Town Hall with the horological clock (Orloj) on its tower. My parents got married there.
